The Chernin Group Takes Minority Stake in Gary Lineker’s ‘The Rest Is…’ Firm Goalhanger

Peter Chernin’s investment group has invested in The Rest Ispodcasting firm Goalhanger.

The partnership sees The Chernin Group (TCG) make a minority investment and take a seat on the Goalhanger board. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the transaction was completed this week.

Having been expanding for a while, the deal represents Goalhanger’s first external investment more than a decade after it launched. The strategic partnership will see Goalhanger draw on TCG’s expertise in creator-led and fandom-driven media businesses to expand hit shows across television, film, digital video, written formats and live experiences, the firm said. The news comes a few weeks after Goalhanger rival The Overlap was acquired by UK audio giant Global Media Group.

Goalhanger, run by former UK soccer star-turned-presenter Gary Lineker, Jack Davenport and Tony Pastor, is behind the supremely popular Rest Is… franchise of podcasts. Those pods now include The Rest is History, The Rest is Politics, The Rest is Entertainment and The Rest is Football. The Rest is History is particularly successful in the U.S., where TGC is based.

The company has been pushing more into content of late, having struck a deal with Netflix to host a daily World Cup show next year fronted by Lineker and having tied with Brent Montgomery’s Wheelhouse on a TV version of The Rest is History.

The Goalhanger founders said: “From launching our first podcast to building a global network of chart-topping shows, the passion of our audiences for smart, gripping conversations has been at the heart of everything we do. Since we first met Peter and the TCG team more than a year ago, it has become increasingly clear that they share our vision for what Goalhanger can become, and are the perfect partner to help us realise that ambition. This allows us to accelerate our U.S. expansion, develop new IP from our hit shows, and take our ideas into new formats, platforms and markets.”

TCG partner Greg Bettinelli added: “We are thrilled to be able to work with Tony, Jack and Gary as well as their amazingly talented team. Goalhanger is truly one of the world’s most compelling emerging media businesses and we can’t wait for the rest of their historical journey.”

TCG investees include Crunchyroll, Substack and Hello Sunshine.

Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP acted as legal advisers to Goalhanger, and Galloways Accounting provided accounting support.
