A little over a decade ago, after breaking out with the hit film The Notebook, Ryan Gosling decided to dedicate himself to smaller-scale projects. He developed a strong creative partnership with director Nicolas Winding Refn, with whom he made Drive and Only God Forgives, and with Derek Cianfrance, with whom he worked together on Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines. It was during the production of The Place Beyond the Pines that Gosling met his wife, Eva Mendes. The movie also featured Bradley Cooper and completed its theatrical run in 2012 without generating the kind of critical acclaim it deserved. It now has a shot at redemption when it debuts on the Peacock streaming service this February.
An epic story about fathers and sons, The Place Beyond the Pines featured Gosling as a criminal and Cooper as an ambitious police officer. The film was produced on a reported budget of $15 million, and grossed nearly $50 million at the worldwide box office. It also featured Ben Mendelsohn, Rose Byrne, Mahershala Ali, and Ray Liotta — all hugely admired in their own right. The epic crime drama is now sitting at a "certified fresh" 79% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Ambitious to a fault, The Place Beyond the Pines finds writer/director Derek Cianfrance reaching for — and often grasping — thorny themes of family, fatherhood, and fate."
Ryan Gosling Has Two Tent Poles Lined Up
Cianfrance went on to direct the drama film The Light Between Oceans, which, incidentally, brought together another couple — Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. He then made the HBO series I Know This Much Is True, starring Mark Ruffalo. His latest film was the true-crime comedy Roofman, starring Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst. Gosling has since embraced the idea of doing more mainstream movies, and starred in the Netflix action film The Gray Man, the action-comedy The Fall Guy, and the satirical comedy Barbie, for which he earned an Oscar nomination. This year, he'll star in Phil Lord and Chris Miller's sci-fi adventure film Project Hail Mary. He's also set to headline Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and slated for a 2027 release.
You can watch The Place Beyond the Pines on Peacock this February, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
