The future of The Last of Us just got a definitive update from HBO Max boss Casey Bloys, who recently sat down for a tell-all interview about the happenings at the studio. Bloys was asked about the highly anticipated third season of The Last of Us, which is due to begin production soon. Season 3 will be set at the same time as Season 2, but it will tell Abby’s side of the story, starring Kaitlyn Dever in more of a leading role while Bella Ramsey likely steps back into a supporting role.
When asked if The Last of Us Season 3 would be the final season of the show, he did not beat around the bush regarding the series’ future. “It certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners, so you can ask them.” The reason Bloys is speaking in the plural form is that he was also asked about Hacks at the same time, seemingly confirming that the next season of Hacks will also be the last. The Last of Us also lost one of its head writers in Neil Druckmann, who stepped back between seasons to focus on the next game at Naughty Dog.
The Last of Us Season 1 tells the story of Joel (Pedro Pascal), who is tasked with taking a young girl, Ellie (Bella Ramsey), across the country to the Fireflies. In Season 2, which is adapted from the 2020 Game of the Year-winning game, Joel dies at the hands of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), and Ellie goes on a revenge quest to find her and kill her for killing Joel. Season 3 will flip the coin around and tell Abby’s side of the story.
‘The Last of Us’ Doesn’t Need a Fourth Season
It makes perfect sense for The Last of Us to end after three seasons, considering that’s as far as the source material has gone. Many fans even felt that Season 2 could have been expanded enough to fit both Ellie and Abby’s perspectives, but it’s understandable that HBO wants to split this across multiple seasons. Other HBO shows like Game of Thrones didn’t quite stick the landing when moving past the source material, and fans would rather not see The Last of Us suffer a similar fate.
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of The Last of Us Season 3, and check out the first two seasons on HBO Max.
