During The Masked Singer season 14 Clueless Night, Handyman was unmasked and revealed to be rapper and actor Tone Lōc. It was a double elimination in which the show also said goodbye to Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson, who was Scarab. Throughout his time as Handyman, Tone Lōc impressed everyone with his energetic performances of "Shake Your Groove Thing" by Peaches & Herb and "Can I Kick It?" by A Tribe Called Quest.
The Masked Singer season 14 panelists had several different guesses for Handyman's identity, with only Robin Thicke guessing correctly. The wrong final guesses included Chuck D (Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg), Mr. T (Ken Jeong), and Ice-T (Rita Ora). Robin was able to guess that Handyman was Tone Lōc because of his signature raspy voice. Tone Lōc's final Masked Singer performance was a rousing rendition of his double-platinum-selling single, "Wild Thing."
In an interview with ScreenRant, Tone Lōc revealed what it was like inside the Handyman costume, what he thought of the panelists' incorrect guesses, how he chose his songs, and what his children thought about him being on The Masked Singer after they dared him to do the show.
The Masked Singer Was A Completely New Experience For Tone Lōc
ScreenRant: What was it like becoming Handyman?
Tone Lōc: I must say that was a big experience, a brand-new experience, for me because I had never dressed up in anything or been a character like that before. So being a handyman was cool. I wish I would have been able to dance and do a little bit more, but I didn't get a chance to because my voice is so recognizable, I couldn't get away with much.
Tone Lōc Thought The Panelists' Wrong Guesses Were Funny
Image via FOXScreenRant: Robin guessed you right off the bat. But Jenny guessed you were Chuck D., Ken said you were Mr. T., and Rita thought you were Ice-T. What did you think of those wrong guesses?
Tone Lōc: [Laughs] I thought that was funny. I knew they had to come up with something. That was funny, though. I thought, like, "Wow, that was pretty good, though," because they're all friends of mine. So that was funny to me, personally.
Tone Lōc Explained How The Handyman Costume Worked
ScreenRant: Was the costume hard to move around in? It looked huge.
Tone Lōc: I mean, yeah, you can only go from A to B, definitely. It's not something you can put on a daily thing. That helmet--the headpiece--is pretty heavy. They had straps from all around your head and around the back part of your neck part. They have the big shoes. Plus, the overalls themselves are pretty heavy. And the gloves, the little wrenches that are on your hands. So there's a lot to it.
Tone Lōc Had Help Choosing His Masked Singer Songs
ScreenRant: You did an amazing job with your incredible performances of "Shake Your Groove Thing" and "Can I Kick It?" How did you choose those songs?
Tone Lōc: My agent, who's sitting right next to me ... they popped out of his head. He was just like, "Do this." And they were asking me to do this and do that, as well. So we just came up with it out of nowhere. You know, we're entertainers. We just come off the head with freestyling.
Tone Lōc Told The Story Of How He Got His Signature Raspy Voice
ScreenRant: Your clue packages mentioned hot tea and a painful accident that changed your voice. Can you tell that story?
Tone Lōc: Way back, of course, when my mom was drinking some coffee, I kind of snuck up. I think beforehand I drank a cup that wasn't scalding hot. And I think that's kind of like what did the throat thing. Because my voice was, like, racked up for a moment. And when I was done, it pretty much sounded like this. Pretty much. Not right away, but it grew pretty much into this.
ScreenRant: You said that your children dared you to do the show. Did they know ahead of time about your appearance, and how did they react to it?
Tone Lōc: I told my daughter because she really gave me the most, but they had no idea when or whatever. But they were always looking constantly. They just wanted to see every episode to see if I was going to be on that particular one or not or whatever. So they were very, very surprised and shocked to see me in that costume, I must say. Bottom line, they couldn't believe it. And they just had their hands over their mouths, and they were just like, "Oh my God, I can't believe you did that! You're doing it right now." So it was cool.
ScreenRant: That's always fun to see the reaction of people's families when they don't know. Did they realize during your first episode that it was you?
Tone Lōc: The first thing, first word out of my mouth, they knew because they're around me non-stop. So they knew immediately. I didn't tell them who or what, you know. They knew I wasn't going to be like some sort of fairy or something like that. But, once I just opened my mouth, they knew immediately.
Tone Lōc Had No Idea Who His Fellow Masked Singer Contestants Were
ScreenRant: Speaking of knowing who people are, in your first episode, the Chrisleys were unmasked, and the show has also revealed Kylie Cantrell, and, on this past episode, Taraji P. Henson. Did you have any idea who you were competing against while you were performing?
Tone Lōc: I had no idea who was around and who was next to me. I had no idea. This show does a good job of keeping everything secretive like they plan on doing. They put gloves on you and jackets and everything and cover your head and take you straight to your dressing room. So you have no idea, literally. You have no idea. They do a good job of that.
ScreenRant: That's what makes it so much fun, right?
Tone Lōc: Yeah. That was fun. That was a cool part because when I saw [Taraji] unmasked, I was like, "Oh, whoa!" I was shocked. I was like, "Oh, that's cool. Okay."
ScreenRant: It was awesome to see both of you unmasked in the same episode.
Tone Lōc: That was cool.
ScreenRant: Two legends unmasked in the same episode.
Tone Lōc: Thank you very much.
The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
