The tragic recent passing of director Rob Reiner led to an outpouring of grief from his industry colleagues and fans. It also prompted a major resurgence of his movies on PVOD platforms. Reiner had a legendary run at the start of his career, with classics such as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men. Also among these films was The Princess Bride, which performed modestly in its theatrical run, but has since emerged as one of the most beloved cult classics of its era. Starring Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, and Mandy Patinkin, the movie remains a fan-favorite on home video, and will soon be available on the free Tubi streaming service in the United Kingdom.
The Princess Bride was released in 1987 to positive reviews, and is now sitting at a "Certified Fresh" 93% critics' score and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website's consensus reads, "A delightfully postmodern fairy tale, The Princess Bride is a deft, intelligent mix of swashbuckling, romance, and comedy that takes an age-old damsel-in-distress story and makes it fresh." The film also earned a rare A+ grade according to CinemaScore. The Princess Bride was produced on a reported budget of $16 million, grossing $30 million at the domestic box office. The movie was written by William Goldman, best known as the Oscar-winning writer of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President's Men. It featured music by Mark Knopfler, the lead vocalist and guitarist of the band Dire Straits.
'The Princess Bride' Is One of the Biggest Cult Classics of the 1980s
Following its theatrical run, The Princess Bride witnessed major success on the home video market, beginning on the VHS format and continuing into the DVD and streaming eras. Because of the film's sustained popularity over the decades, there have been rumors about a possible remake or follow-up. The Princess Bride also featured Wallace Shawn, Chris Sarandon, Andre the Giant, Fred Savage, and Christopher Guest. Reiner's last feature film was Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which was released last year. He passed away earlier this year. Reports allege that he and his wife were stabbed; authorities say their son, Nick Reiner, is a suspect.
The Princess Bride will be released on the free Tubi service on February 1. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
