EXCLUSIVE: British playwright, screenwriter and director Alexander Zeldin has signed with CAA.

The signing comes as Zeldin’s critically-acclaimed play The Other Place is about to have its New York premiere in an Off Broadway production at The Shed starring Emma D’Arcy and Tobias Menzies. Zeldin wrote and is directing the play, which is inspired by the story of Antigone and premiered at London’s National Theatre in 2024.

The Other Place synopsis reads, “On the anniversary of the death of their father, two sisters reunite at the family home after a period of estrangement. Their uncle is attempting a fresh start, but one of the sisters threatens to shatter this peace, demanding justice for the pain she carries. Guilt, grief, and greed battle it out as the family goes to war over dreams of their future, and visions of their past.”

In addition to D’Arcy (House of the Dragon) and Menzies (The Crown), the Off Broadway cast also features Lee Braithwaite, Lorna Brown, Jerry Killick and Ruby Stokes. The production runs from January 30 to March 1.

Zeldin’s play Confessions, which he wrote and directed, premiered at The National Theatre in 2023, and was a New York Times Critics Pick.

An example of Zeldin’s “docu-theater” approach, his The Inequalities Trilogy was a series of plays examining love, compassion and resilience in our time. The first in the trilogy, Beyond Caring, was a portrait of people struggling to survive on minimum wage; the sequel, Love, focused on the sacrifices of homeless families forced to live in temporary accommodation (Zeldin wrote and directed a 2018 BBC film adaptation); and the final entry, Faith, Hope And Charity, focused on a struggling community center.

Zeldin’s awards and nominations include Quercus Trust Award, Arts Foundation Fellowship and seven Drama Desk Award nominations. He was also selected by Berlin’s Schaubühne as the Artist-in-Focus for their 2024 Festival of International New Drama.‍ Also in 2024, he was made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture.

In the UK, Zeldin is represented by Nick Marston at Curtis Brown.
