Jared's first console was the PS1, wherein he fell for Spider-Man, Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.
While The Witcher 4 is in active development and a Witcher-themed Reigns game has been announced, it is also a momentous occasion for the franchise because Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is back on mobile devices (iOS and Android). Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales was previously unplayable due to a connectivity bug that occurred roughly a year ago, and the game was removed from mobile device stores as a result.
Thankfully, this severe issue finally seems to have been remedied, as was announced in The Witcher’s Twitter/X post. It was still available on PC and consoles, though it’s incredibly exciting to have The Witcher’s single-player Gwent-centered RPG back on mobile devices, and it’ll be interesting to see if this effort translates into any future Thronebreaker content.
Thronebreaker’s Revival Is A Promising Sign
Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a phenomenal RPG that blends isometric exploration, base-building and deck-building, paramount dialogue choices, and Gwent card battles. Of course, if players aren’t terribly fond of The Witcher 3’s Gwent minigame, despite it playing fairly differently in Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, they may not be particularly enthusiastic about how it encompasses about 80% of gameplay. For anyone who adores Gwent, though, Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is a treat.
It’s fantastic that the problems that plagued it appear to have been solved. But it’s also notable that it's now back in mobile app stores, about a year after it was removed.
The Witcher is in the middle of a renaissance of sorts, and perhaps developer CD Projekt Red simply wanted to ensure that Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales didn’t have one foot in the grave any longer. Otherwise, this resuscitation suggests that a Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales sequel could at long last be on the way.
Is It Too Little Too Late?
Unfortunately, it was explicitly stated more than half a decade ago that there were no plans to make a second Thronebreaker game. Apparently, a financial disappointment, it’d be a miracle now if Gwent’s Witcher Tales subtitle ever had a Thronebreaker successor. In the meantime, it’s great that Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales is once more available on iOS and Android, and it will hopefully stay there for the foreseeable future.
It may not hold a ton of weight in terms of a game that players should tackle if they want to catch up on the Witcher trilogy’s story, since Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales serves as a prequel entry. Still, it is a terrific RPG nonetheless and has one of the best stories of any Witcher game, complete with compelling characters, engaging gameplay, and rich progression.
