There's something to be said about an actor who shares the screen with legends such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz, and still manages to stand out. Walton Goggins' career was elevated to the next level thanks to Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, which featured him in a supporting role alongside those three A-listers. Waltz won his second Oscar for the film, which featured arguably the best performances of Foxx and DiCaprio's careers — they were both snubbed by the Academy. Goggins, on the other hand, leveled up after Django Unchained broke box office records and earned accolades. The movie is now heading to a new streaming home, where more audiences can experience its wicked thrills.
Beginning February 1, Django Unchained will be available domestically on Hulu. The film was originally released in 2012, and served as Tarantino's follow-up to the massively successful World War II epic Inglourious Basterds, which made around $380 million globally and was hailed by many as Tarantino's crowning achievement. Django Unchained emerged as an even bigger hit, grossing around $450 million worldwide against a reported budget of $100 million. It won Tarantino his second Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and was nominated in five categories overall. Django Unchained is now sitting at a "certified fresh" 87% critics' score and a 92% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Bold, bloody, and stylistically daring, Django Unchained is another incendiary masterpiece from Quentin Tarantino."
Spike Lee Wasn't a Fan of 'Django Unchained'
The film courted controversy, mainly for its graphic violence and for Tarantino's perceived reliance on racial slurs. Director Spike Lee was not a fan, and apparently still remains quite offended by the film, going by the indirect comments he made in last year's Mr. Scorsese documentary series on Apple TV+. Goggins, who was previously best known for his work on the television shows The Shield and Justified, went on to star in HBO's The White Lotus, and in Prime Video's big-budget video game adaptation Fallout, which is dominating the streaming charts as we speak.
Django Unchained also featured Samuel L. Jackson and Kerry Washington in memorable supporting roles, and will land on Hulu this February. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
