This week's episode of Will Trent opens with the murder of a dancer named Catalina. While at an afterparty at a nightclub with a group of dancers that she regularly competes with, Catalina suddenly drops dead in the middle of the dance floor. Will (Ramón Rodriguéz) and Faith (Iantha Richardson) spend the episode investigating the case, with the help of Amanda (Sonja Sohn) and Pete (Kurt Yue). All the while, spending time investigating a group of predominantly Spanish-speaking attendees makes Will feel insecure about his lack of connection to the language and his Puerto Rican heritage.

Season 4, Episode 4, "The Man From Nowhere" has a compelling case with an emotional twist, and the subplot is intense as well. The heart of the episode, though, is how it explores Will's intense desire to belong, and in particular, how his upbringing robbed him of his connection to his heritage. Will is grieving not just the childhood that he never had, but the connection that he could have had to his culture and his community if his mother (Raiany Silva) hadn't been killed. It's another reminder of what Ulster (Greg Germann) took from Will, and it grounds what is otherwise a case-heavy episode in something very character-centric.

In 'Will Trent' Season 4, Episode 4, Will and Faith Investigate the Poisoning of a Dancer

Will and Faith learn that Catalina was poisoned, and the GBI holds everyone at the nightclub until they can figure out what's going on. Will struggles with his Spanish while interviewing witnesses and potential suspects, making him feel like he's failing. They learn that Catalina's dance partner, Javi, used to dance with her rival, Roxy (Itziar Martinez). This episode also sees the return of Bon Bon Chiffon (Jonny Beauchamp), who praises Will for subtly mixing up his style, and who hilariously fills Will and Faith in on the drama amongst the dancers. Roxy is their number one suspect, especially after they learn that someone poisoned Catalina's makeup. When Javi confesses, both Will and Faith are convinced that he's being paid to cover for someone.

During a session with his therapist, Dr. Roach (Margaret Cho), Will tells her that the case is bringing up feelings of insecurity and a lack of belonging because he isn't fluent in Spanish and didn't get to start connecting with his heritage until two years ago. She validates both his concerns and his identity, and then Will goes back into the case with a renewed confidence. Will and Faith learn that Catalina frequently stole Roxy's makeup and clothes, and they realize that Roxy was the intended poisoning victim. The investigation leads Will to Ramos Delgado (Juan Javier Cardenas), a diplomat who frequents the club with his wife, Isabela (Carolina Gomez). Isabela and Roxy are in love, and she was going to leave Ramos for Roxy, so he tried to kill her when he found out.

It's obvious to Will and Faith that Ramos killed Catalina, but they don't have enough proof to take away his diplomatic immunity. Later, Will confronts Ramos at the nightclub, even pointing out that Catalina was killed with the same poison that was used on Ramos' political rival six years earlier. Will tricks Ramos into a confession while Faith is secretly listening in, and they are able to implicate him and take away his diplomatic immunity. As Ramos is arrested, Roxy and Isabella thank Will, relieved that they can finally be together. Will then goes home and dances with Betty (Bluebell), using some moves that he learned from Roxy earlier that day.

In 'Will Trent' Season 4, Episode 4, Angie and Ormewood Reopen a Cold Case

Angie (Erika Christensen) and Ormewood (Jake McLaughlin) are disappointed when they learn that they have to work with some criminology students to help out a professor. The two students turn Angie and Ormewood's attention to a cold case: in 2003, a woman named Beverly Routledge was murdered. The only real potential witness, Beverly's neighbor, Toni, was dismissed because she lived in a halfway house and had previously spent time in jail. The college students have a possible lead on a car that Toni had said was following her the night Beverly was murdered, so the four of them search for evidence and end up getting the license plate of a man named Wayne Hensley who was involved in a nearby crime around that same time. Wayne's DNA matches three past sexual assault cases, but he's not Beverly's killer.

Angie interviews Toni, who tells her that the halfway house was run by a man named Jim Branson. Jim had been running a sex trafficking ring out of the halfway house, and he forced residents to comply by threatening them with a loss of housing. Toni had gone to Beverly, who was planning to speak to Jim and then contact the police the week before she was killed. This is pretty concrete proof that Jim killed Beverly, but they don't yet have evidence tying him to her crime scene.

One of the college students, Kaia (Kay Benson), tries to get Jim's DNA by snooping through his trash. He corners her with a gun, but Ormewood and Angie make it to her in time, and Ormewood arrests him. This is a powerful scene, but the storyline is cut too short, and the episode never returns to this storyline. I would've liked to see Angie and Ormewood checking in with the college students again, and Jim actually being confirmed as the murderer on-screen, but this subplot just ends abruptly with his arrest.

Will Trent airs Tuesday nights at 8:00 P.M. EST on ABC.

Pros & Cons

  • This episode puts Will front and center during an investigation that brings up his longing to have a stronger connection to his Puerto Rican heritage.
  • This episode is very funny, with sharp one-liners throughout, especially from Bon Bon, Will, and Faith.
  • The episode doesn't properly wrap up its subplot, which feels like it ends too abruptly.
