1883, the Yellowstone spin-off set in the Wild West around 140 years ago, is seeing renewed interest on streaming services. Data from FlixPatrol shows significant interest in the show after it entered Paramount+'s top ten in the last week. Given that the Western drama aired roughly five years ago, this resurgence proves the Yellowstone universe's ability to remain entertaining even after a series finishes its run. The flagship series is one of the most popular on Paramount+ globally, ranking fourth at the time of writing, alongside other Taylor Sheridan hits like Tulsa King, Landman, and Mayor of Kingstown.
Set in the 19th century, 1883 tells a different chapter of the Dutton family history — a much more brutal and devastating chapter. Escaping poverty, the Duttons set out on a journey for a better future in a part of the New World everyone has been talking about: Montana. However, the reality is much different from what they've heard, since the world was never new, having been occupied by Native Americans for ages. It also has its own character and style, marked by rugged terrain and an unforgiving climate. Many pay the ultimate price. Tim McGraw (James), Isabel May (Elsa), Faith Hill (Margaret), and Audie Rick (John) make up the Dutton clan. The cast also includes Sam Elliott (Shea Brennan), LaMonica Garret (Thomas), Marc Rissman (Josef), Eric Nelsen (Ennis), and James Landry Hebert (Wade).
143 Years Later, the Duttons Persist
The Dutton family has been explored in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, but it is far from over. The ranch they fought so hard to acquire and maintain is no longer in their possession, relieving everyone of the pressure to keep the family legacy alive in a world that no longer cares about it. Following John Dutton's (Kevin Costner) death in Yellowstone, his remaining children forge their own paths. Beth (Kelly Reilly) and her husband Rip (Cole Hauser) buy a smaller ranch to continue doing what they love best; the duo has a long-gestating spin-off in the works. Meanwhile, Kayce (Luke Grimes) leaves the ranching world behind to focus on law enforcement. His spin-off, Marshals, premieres on CBS on March 1. Its description reads:
"With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana. Kayce and his teammates – Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green), Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel), Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) and Miles Kittle (Tatanka Means) – must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate (Brecken Merrill) and his confidantes Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) from the Broken Rock reservation."
